The city of Vaughan will be holding its renowned Canada Day celebration digitally for a second year, with major Canadian entertainers involved.

The digital event will be emceed by Tara Sloane, a Juno-nominated singer who is also known as a sports interviewer. There will be a series of musical performances headlined by Canadian rock veterans Sam Roberts Band, as well as R&B singer Jully Black and legendary cover band Practically Hip.

Vaughan’s Canada Day stream will also include entertainment for children, with a puppet show, animal show and StoryWalks presented by Vaughan Public Libraries all in the works. Last year’s event, headlined by the Barenaked Ladies, was the first virtual Canada Day celebration in Vaughan, and the city will be hoping to replicate its success in 2021.

Recreation Vaughan will provide activities that can be done at home, including Zumba, kite-making and creating fireworks in a jar. There will also be a montage of short video messages sent in by Vaughan residents celebrating the occasion. Municipal Canada Day celebrations, known for red-and-white promotional products and big performances, have had to adapt over the past two years to online streaming and virtual venues. Vaughan’s event, typically one of the largest Canada Day parties, is hoping to lead the way.

Vaughan’s 2021 virtual Canada Day celebration will begin at 2 pm on July 1.
