WHAT’S GOING ON HERE? Stretch of King-Vaughan road closed until Nov. 30 for bridge reconstruction

The City of Vaughan said Monday, June 21 that the King-Vaughan bridge is getting an upgrade.

JUST THE FACTS:

-- The existing temporary bridge will be removed and a new bridge will be built on King-Vaughan Road between Highway 27 and Kipling Avenue.

-- To safely accommodate the work and facilitate the construction of the permanent bridge, the road will be temporarily closed, except to local traffic, from June 21 to Nov. 30, 2021.

-- It is part of the City of Vaughan’s 2021 Capital Works Program.

-- The closure is on King-Vaughan Road between Highway 27 to Kipling Avenue. King-Vaughan Road is a minor arterial road extending easterly from Huntington Road to Bathurst Street. It is not a transit route and sees minimal daily traffic. The section of roadway impacted by the closure between Highway 27 and Kipling Avenue provides access to three separate properties.

-- The King-Vaughan bridge was originally constructed in 1920 as an arch bridge that accommodated a single lane of traffic.

-- In 2015, as a result of advanced deterioration, it was reinforced with a temporary steel modular bridge overtop of the existing bridge.

-- Subsequently, the city initiated detailed design work and developed a permanent solution to reconstruct the bridge. Beginning Monday, June 21, construction activities include the removal of both the temporary steel modular bridge and the remaining elements of the original bridge. A new single span, two-lane concrete bridge will be built in its place.

-- Local and emergency access to properties on the west side of the bridge will remain open from Highway 27. Local and emergency access to properties on the east side of the bridge will remain open from Kipling Avenue.
