It’s a mid-winter snowfall. You spend far too much time clearing your driveway only to see the dreaded city snowplow heading down your street. Most Brampton homeowners know what happens next.

The snowplow leaves what’s called a windrow at the end of your driveway. A mound of snow pushed from the street that means you have to put back on your boots, gloves and toque to reshovel it.

That will be a thing of the past for local residents if councillor Gurpreet Dhillon has his way.

Dhillon, regional councillor for wards 9 and 10, introduced a motion at Wednesday’s Committee of Council meeting asking city staff to determine the cost of the city providing windrow removal for Bramptonians.

“The cities of Toronto, Richmond Hill and Markham have similar programs, and I have heard from residents from all over the city stating that this matter needs to addressed,” said Dhillon. “It is not fair for our residents to clear their own driveways, then have to clear the additional snow pile created by the plows.”

An initial report predicted the cost to the city would be about $7.8M per year.

“When we receive the report, I will ensure that I work with staff to find the internal savings and efficiencies required to provide this service that our residents are demanding.”

The plan will be prepared in time for the city’s 2022 budget deliberations.
