It didn't take long for 18,000 new appointments for second doses of the COVID-19 vaccine at York Region public health clinics to be snapped up today.

Within one hour after the appointments opened at 8 a.m. June 14, they were all booked, according to York Region spokesperson Patrick Casey.

A record-setting 27,800 concurrent users swarmed the region's website to book online appointments this morning.

Eligible individuals currently include anyone who lives, works or goes to school in York Region who received their first dose on or before May 9.

Second dose appointments are also available at an accelerated eight-week interval to those who received a first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Who's vaccinated, as of June 14?:

784,900 York Region residents have received at least one COVID-19 vaccination dose
76.6% of York Region’s adult population (age 18+)
74.5% of York Region’s eligible residents (age 12+)
189,769 York Region residents have been fully vaccinated
19.7% of York Region’s adult population (age 18+)
18.0% of York Region’s eligible residents (age 12+)

For those who were out of luck this morning, additional appointments will be released throughout the week, so residents should check back often at york.ca/covid19vaccine, Casey said.

Previously booked second-dose appointments will continue to be honoured and will not be cancelled unless a new and earlier appointment is confirmed, he added.

"Public Health continues to monitor updates on vaccine appointments and will look to further increase appointment opportunities based on vaccine supply," he said.
