Not only is the province moving into Step 1 of its reopening plan -- restaurant patios, outdoor recreation and retail permitted to open, with strict capacity limits -- but Georgina is also marking the second annual #ShopLocalGeorgina Day.

The social media celebration kicks off June 11 and continues all weekend long. featuring special deals and Shop Local Georgina swag.

Residents are encouraged to think, shop, love and support local, as this has been a particularly hard year for businesses faced with multiple COVID-19 pandemic shutdowns.

The day also marks the 46th anniversary of the Georgina Chamber of Commerce, which initiated the #ShopLocalGeorgina campaign in 2020.

The chamber launched shoplocalgeorgina.ca, a one-stop-shop for local shopping and dining and playing around the Georgina area.

The chamber, through its partnership with the Ontario Chamber of Commerce, also has several free, self-screening COVID-19 test kits for small and medium local businesses.

During the latest lockdown, local businesses took to social media to start their own homegrown sign wars -- using a combination of quick wit, signs and billboards across town to egg on other businesses and engage residents with a laugh while being closed.
