As part of Emergency Preparedness Week, Central York Fire Services is reminding residents of the importance of being prepared in case of an emergency.
Held annually since 1996, the week is a national awareness initiative that takes place the first full week of May and is a collaborative event by provincial and territorial emergency management organizations and Public Safety Canada.
Preparing for an emergency consists of three basic steps:
Central York recommends all households develop escape plans so everyone knows how to get out safely if the smoke alarm or carbon monoxide detector sound.
You should practice the plan using different scenarios with each member of the family. Consider the needs of those who may need additional assistance, such as children, and decide who will provide that assistance.
You should also establish a meeting place at a safe distance from your house to be able to account for everyone. Remember, once you get out of the house, stay out; it's dangerous to go back.
The fire department also recommends you draw out a complete floor plan of your house, along with two ways out of a room, if possible, and any other features that can provide safe passage for evacuation.
