From permits to perimeter fencing, there’s more to backyard renovations than hiring the right contractor.

With backyard improvements top of mind for many as quarantine measures continue, the Town of Whitby wants to make sure residents know exactly what’s required before doing any work. Here’s what you need to know:

1.Deck permits

Just as you plan where to place patio furniture, you need to plan exactly where your deck goes before building. There are specific regulations around deck sizes and setbacks, with decks over two feet in height requiring a building permit. Decks less than two feet tall do not require a permit.

2.Accessory structures

Sheds, gazebos and pool houses are all considered accessory structures and require permits if larger than 10 m square. Permits must be applied for before building begins, and structures must meet town regulations governing setbacks. Residential accessory structures are not permitted for use as living quarters or businesses.

3.Swimming pool safety

Any swimming pool in the town deeper than 0.5 m must be surrounded by pool safety fencing that’s at least 1.2-m tall and meets all safety standards. Pool enclosure permits can be applied for online at www.whitby.ca. In addition, hot tubs, whirlpools and swim spas must be covered with a secure, locking cover.

4.Construction noise

When building a deck, fence or accessory structure, it’s important to remember construction noise is not permitted between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. as per provincial order. The town’s noise bylaw is in place to ensure a peaceful, quiet environment for all residents of Whitby.

5.COVID-19 construction regulations

Before starting any construction, double-check current COVID-19 restrictions. The current stay-at-home orders permit residential construction, but are subject to change. In addition, even when construction is permitted, public health orders, including wearing a mask and/or physical distancing, must be followed.
