WHAT'S GOING ON HERE? Flood control projects in Thornhill

Flood control projects, set to go ahead in the West Thornhill area of Markham, will increase the capacity of an overloaded storm sewer system and protect neighbourhoods from potential flooding and sewer backup, while reducing property damage and the devastating effects on residents and business owners.
Just the facts:
Back in August of 2005, stormwater run-off from a severe rainstorm exceeded the capacity of drainage systems and caused extensive flooding of private property and roadways in the area.
A strategy to address the issue was adopted by Markham council in October of 2011 after the results of an environmental assessment study identified system improvements to increase capacity and reduce the risk of flooding.
Construction is set to begin in May with completion dates pegged for the fall of 2022.
Johnson Street, St. Andres Court, Ida Street, Dove Lane and Wiarton Court, as well as portions of Royal Orchard Boulevard, Kirk Drive, Knotty Pine Trail, Blue Spruce Lane and Augusta Court, are included in the scope of the project.
Ward 1 Coun. Keith Irish, will host a virtual community information meeting May 5 from 7 to 9 p.m. for residents impacted by the phased construction schedule. Meeting ID 897 2675 4472. Passcode vtR0J4B
