After more than a year away from playing fields due to the impact of COVID-19, Sport Aurora is aiming to put kids back in the game.

It is the intent of All Sport One Day, a series of four one-day “test drive” events.

The message is simple: get children six years of age and older active through sampling a series of non-competitive, no-pressure activities.

“It is a win for both Aurora residents and our local sports organizations,” said Sport Aurora president Ron Weese. “The pandemic has kept many people inside and less active, which is hurting both physical and emotional health, particularly in children and youth.

“Our sport members are also eager to get back to their service to the community when outdoor activities can be started safely.

“We hope ASOD will reignite interest in local sport and physical activity and demonstrate how safe organized sport is. When public health gives permission to do so, we will all be back on the fields and in the facilities.”

Encouraged by response to its June 12 debut, which sold out within 24 hours, Sport Aurora is anticipating high interest in its next offering on Aug. 14. Registration begins July 14.

“The excitement will be just hitting the fields, courts and diamonds after a very long hiatus,” said Sport Aurora executive director Laurie Mueller. “And (it) will be thrilling to watch as 120 participants do so that day.”

Additional program dates are Oct. 9 and Nov. 13.

A grant worth $3,700 from Participaction Better Community Challenge enabled Sport Aurora to provide the June 12 sessions free of charge.

The additional sessions cost $10 for morning or afternoon programs.
