The town of Aurora and Newmarket are reopening outdoor amenities on May 22, just in time for the long weekend.

In response to new provincial guidelines, outdoor recreational amenities such as golf courses, tennis, pickleball and basketball courts, soccer, baseball and other sports fields and skate parks will be allowed to reopen.

Outdoor limits for social gathering and organized public events will be expanded to allow these amenities to be used by up to five people.

No outdoor sports or recreational classes are permitted.

"We are happy to announce the reopening of more much-needed outdoor recreational amenities to the public prior to the extended stay-at-home order,” said Newmarket Mayor John Taylor.

“This was made possible due to the collective efforts of all Newmarket residents through high vaccination rates and the public's co-operation in following public health and safety measures. The data we are receiving from York Region Public Health is getting better and better each day and it is only a matter of time before we can open more amenities to the public to enjoy. Please continue to stay vigilant and do your part to help stop the spread of COVID-19," Taylor said.

"I, along with other mayors across the province, advocated for this and I am in support of reopening our economy and outdoor facilities while staying safe. This is the first step to reopening safely and returning to a more normal everyday life,” said Aurora Mayor Tom Mrakas.
