York Region arms have been jabbed 620,148 times with COVID-19 vaccine doses, bringing the latest tally of vaccinated adults to 63 per cent of the population.
Ontario's vaccine rollout has reached 55.7 per cent of the eligible population of 16 years old and up.
York Region's rate exceeds Toronto at 60.1 per cent, Peel Region at 59 per cent, and Hamilton at 49.2 per cent, as of May 17 for eligible adults aged 18 and older.
Canada has given first doses to 46.4 per cent of the population, edging close to the tally of about 47 per cent in the United States.
This morning, York Region opened 51,000 new vaccination appointments, including for the first time all adults aged 18 and older who live or work in York Region.
Appointments remain available for booking at york.ca/COVID19Vaccine, according to York Region spokesperson Patrick Casey.
Also newly eligible are individuals aged 16 and older who are health-care workers or cannot work from home (Group 1 and 2) and individuals 16 and older with highest, high and at-risk risk health conditions.
York Region also opened second dose appointments to eligible high-risk health care workers who have already received a first dose.
"The opening of these appointments follows provincial direction to accelerate vaccine eligibility requirements for all Ontario residents 18-plus and to begin second dose appointments earlier than the extended four-month interval," said Casey.
