York Region District School Board invites all students, staff and community members to attend the virtual renaming ceremony of Hodan Nalayeh Secondary School taking place Wednesday, May 19 at 7 p.m.

The renaming of the school follows a unanimous vote by York Region District School Board trustees at a September board meeting to rename Vaughan Secondary School.

“I would like to recognize members of our Black community, who brought the issue of the naming of this school, and the effect that it has had on our students, to the attention of trustees and staff. We appreciate their advocacy on behalf of Black students in York Region,” said Chair of the Board Cynthia Cordova. “The new name will better reflect the identities, accomplishments and aspirations of our students at Hodan Nalayeh Secondary School.”

“This is a positive change that will make the school community a more safe, inclusive and welcoming environment for all students and staff,” said Director of Education Louise Sirisko. “Our students, staff members and families can feel proud to be part of a school and community that values equity and inclusivity.”

Members of the public interested in attending are asked to preregister for the virtual event.
