The 509 new cases surpass the second wave record of 507 cases on Jan. 9.

York Region marked its single highest daily increase in COVID-19 cases on April 8, with 509 new cases surpassing the second wave pandemic record of 507 cases on Jan. 9.

If there's a bright side to the record-breaking tally, it's that only 12 of the new cases are confirmed as variants of concerns, when as recently as April 4, variants accounted for about two-thirds of new cases.

Newmarket's new cases tallied 26, peaks previously seen on March 27 and Jan. 14. However, three of the 26 new cases on April 8 are variants, compared to 23 of 26 on March 27.

Of Newmarket's 149 active cases on April 8, 49 are variant cases, and two of 43 deaths have now been linked to variant cases.

Of York Region's 2,715 active cases, 983 are variant cases, and 19 of 565 COVID-19 related deaths are variant cases.
