The TDSB will review 583 school names I the city to ‘better reflect’ Toronto’s diversity

The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) is going to take a look at its school names to see if any need to be changed in order to "better reflect the diversity of the city."

According to a press release published on Wednesday, the TDSB is forming a working group that will propose a new re-naming process for Toronto's schools and kickstart a review of 583 school names.

The working group has two main jobs: suggest changes to the TDSB's current naming process so that schools can be named or re-named to reflect Toronto's diversity, and start the process of a city-wide name review. The report must be submitted no later than June 30, 2021.

"This group will be comprised of students, parents/guardians, educators, community members, appropriate qualified experts and individuals involved in anti-racism work," the school board said in its release.

"This plan aims to improve the naming and renaming process for schools to ensure that school names better represent the diverse people, cultures and history of Toronto, including, but not limited to, Indigenous and Black leaders and the contemporary values of the city."
