Two services in Aurora and Newmarket are receiving more than $200,000 in government funding, local MPPs have announced.

Southlake Residential Care Village, a long-term care home in Newmarket, is getting up to $163,358 in one-time combined federal-provincial funding to improve and make upgrades, Newmarket-Aurora MPP Christine Elliott said.

“Our government continues to prioritize the safety and well-being of long-term care residents, and we (are) proud to be investing in upgrades that will improve the quality of long-term care in Newmarket,” she said in a statement.

“The funding announced (April 20) will benefit many of our most vulnerable community members, providing them with the comfortable and safe living spaces they need and deserve.”

The funding will allow Southlake Village to install two packaged rooftops units and five rooftop make-up air systems. This project will include an Ionization air purification system to improve air quality and humidification of the home.

The funding is part of a $100-million investment to install heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems, and make retrofits or repairs to fire sprinkler systems, in 95 long-term care homes across the province.

The investment will help provide care, comfort and safety to residents, Elliott said.

The provincewide funding is part of a combined federal-provincial investment of up to $1.05 billion to build or renovate health and safety-related projects in long-term care, education and municipalities through the COVID-19 Resilience Infrastructure Stream (CVRIS) of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP).

Meanwhile, the provincial government is investing $39,000 to help Central York Fire Services, which serves Aurora and Newmarket, address the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The funding will enhance fire safety training and support safety inspection programs to ensure compliance with the Ontario Fire Code, Elliott and Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill MPP Michael Parsa announced.
"The impacts of the pandemic are being felt by front-line workers everywhere, and our heroes in the municipal fire services are no exception,” Parsa said in a statement.

“That is why our government is committed to continue providing them with the support they need to keep themselves and our communities safe."
