According to the Region of Peel, by 2041, one in five residents will be over the age of 65.
As the region prepares to accommodate an aging population, a Brampton long-term-care home is getting a forward-thinking expansion.
A wellness village is being built at Peel Manor Long Term Care.
Just the facts:
In June 2014, Peel Region council approved the conceptual plans for the village, which was adapted in 2017 to provide person-centred care and underground parking.
In 2019 a $115,552,000 construction tender was awarded for the project and the facility is expected to be partially operational by 2022.
The plans include a 59-bed ‘butterfly’ unit, focused on caring for those with dementia.
The Seniors Health and Wellness Village at Peel Manor will include a four-storey building with above and underground parking. Peel Housing Corporation buildings are located nearby including Manorbridge, a 98-unit building with a focus on housing seniors, 18 family-focused townhouses called Park Estates, and Nance Horwood offering 30 units with a mental health focus and the Cheshire Home for residents with disabilities.
The Salvation Army building nearby is also part of the village, offering housing for 18 women and children fleeing domestic violence.
The new building will offer an adult day program, and respite programs and focus on helping seniors stay in their own homes longer through nursing and PSW support, dental care, community paramedicine and more.
Due to the pandemic, staff haven’t been able to secure funding support from higher levels of government and have asked Peel Council to support a phased rollout of the plans which will cost $1.2 million in 2022 and $3 million in 2023. The phased rollout will see the adult day services and respite as pilot programs in 2023.
