This week, the region administered more than 18,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses to the 80 and older age group, bringing the total number of doses to 66,420 as of March 5.

Vaccines were administered, based on the province’s vaccination plan, to those living in long-term care facilities, retirement homes and congregate living facilities, along with health-care workers at those facilities.

“This is great news for our residents and our communities,” said Patrick Casey, spokesperson for York Region Public Health.

A new block of 3,000 vaccine appointments are available for March 9, 10 and 11 from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Richmond Green Sports Centre in Richmond Hill and the Georgina Ice Palace in Georgina.

Online registration opens March 8 at 8:30 a.m. for appointments.

Appointments are for those 80 and older.

Vaccines supply remains limited and the region expects the limited appointments available March 9, 10 and 11 to book up quickly.

The region added a new colour-coded system to each of its vaccine centres:

Red: appointments are fully booked;

Orange: limited appointment availability; and

Green: now booking new appointments.

Residents are encouraged to check the region’s vaccine clinic webpage -- york.ca/covid19vaccine -- often, as there may be a cancellation or no-shows resulting in a limited number of appointments.

York Region Public Health will release additional appointment slots as vaccines become available.

What you should know when booking an appointment:• Currently, only the highest-priority health-care workers who live or work in York Region along with York Region residents who are 80-years-old or older are eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine;
