Vaughan joins a growing list of cities that don’t want a new 400 series highway running through them.
City council has voted to withdraw its support for the proposed Highway 413, also known as the ‘GTA West Highway.’
Council was originally going to debate whether it would support federal oversight of the province’s environmental assessment of the preferred route, but instead voted to pull its endorsement of the project.
The proposed route would run from Highway 400 in Vaughan, and curve west to where the 401 and 407 meet in Halton Region. As proposed it would run through Vaughan, Caledon, Brampton and Halton Hills.
Last week Mississauga City Council unanimously passed a motion opposing the project saying it would have a disastrous impact on the environment.
Brampton and Caledon have passed motions asking for federal assessments of the proposed route.
The federal government is expected to make a decision on whether to proceed with an environmental assessment sometime in may.
The project’s estimated cost has yet to be determined.
