The City of Brampton is leasing out land to build a new long-term care home with affordable housing units.

City council have given staff the green light to sign a lease on up to five acres of land at the Flower City Community Campus to build a 160-bed long-term care home and 140 affordable housing units.

Golden Age Village for the Elderly (GAVE) is a registered charity working to ease issues around housing availability for seniors in Ontario.

“The City of Brampton is dedicated to supporting our seniors, who sacrificed their lives to give their children, grandchildren, freedom and a better life in Canada,” said Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown.

He says this project will help seniors live in comfort and security in Brampton.

“This project directly supports our City’s most vulnerable residents and the socio-economic impact of this Campus of Care facility will support the City’s economic recovery by creating jobs in the City of Brampton in many sectors including construction, information technology and long-term care,” said Brampton CAO David Barrick.

GAVE was established in 2013 in response to a crisis in housing for seniors within the Vietnamese community and aims to create a full campus of care by 2025.

The goal is to build a culturally appropriate long-term care facility, areas for celebration of culture and heritage, access to healthcare and affordable housing.

According to GAVE, there are 3,131 people on the provincial waitlist for long-term care in Brampton alone and there are more than 600 Vietnamese seniors in the GTA in need of suitable housing.

Some of these residents are the original ‘boat people’ who came to Canada after Vietnam war ended in 1975.

In 2013, GAVE bought a five-acre site in Vaughan to build the planned facility, but were unable to move forward due to Greenbelt protections.

Now, the group is partnering with the City of Brampton to turn this dream into reality.

The units will be available for not just residents of Vietnamese decent, but a variety of cultures and backgrounds.
