A $200,000 grant from the federal government has sparked a surge in the number of electric vehicle charging stations in King Township.

The township’s contribution to the expansion of the electric vehicle charging stations is $300,000, which will allow for the installation of between 10 and 12 charging stations throughout the township. This will amount to over 20 charging connectors.

“The funding from the Ministry of Natural Resources will help us continue to build on King Township’s green legacy,” said Mayor Steve Pellegrini. “We know electric vehicles are the future of personal transportation. That’s why we’ve started to put the infrastructure in place now that will allow our residents convenient access to charging stations.”

The new chargers will be a combination of Level 3 fast chargers and Level 2 chargers that will be able to charge most electric vehicle models.

There will be the ability to generate data on usage and electric vehicle uptake in specific locations to better understand how to plan for growth. The charging stations are expected to be installed at municipal facilities in King City, Nobleton and Schomberg in 2021.

“This improved network is just the latest action we’re taking on improving our community’s overall sustainability,” Pellegrini said.

King Township is also drafting a climate action plan with the hopes that it be implemented in the first quarter of 2021. It’s a community-wide plan to best mitigate, adapt and improve resilience to the effects and impacts of climate change on a local level in the short and long term.
