Peel Regional Council voted to strongly oppose the proposed GTA West Transportation Corridor in a regional council meeting on March 11.

Eighteen people voted in favour of a motion against the corridor, including Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie and six opposed, including Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown and Caledon Mayor Allan Thompson.

The motion that carried was strongly opposed to “any and all” construction done in advance and tied to preparations for the corridor, and opposed, in principle, the “construction of any transportation corridor traversing the Region of Peel,” including the proposed corridor.

The motion read that the 413 corridor would “wreak havoc on the environment, encourage residential sprawl and dependence on the car as a significant means of transportation.”

Three additional motions were also carried during the council meeting regarding the proposed corridor. Councillors asked that the province study other options that could replace the proposed highway, and requested that the budget for the corridor instead be put toward “regionally connected transit, active transportation, and other sustainable modes of transportation.”

These votes came after a series of delegations by residents, organizations and corporations, for and against the proposed corridor, including Phil King, president of Orlando Corporation, and Divya Arora and Lajanthan Prabaharan from Community Climate Council.

They join Toronto, Vaughan, Halton Region, Orangeville and others in their opposition to the 413.
