Flags at Town of Newmarket facilities and buildings are at half-mast March 11 as the municipality participates in a national day of observance for COVID-19.
The gesture marks the first anniversary since the World Health Organization declared a global pandemic that has claimed the lives of more than 2.5-million people worldwide, including more than 22,000 Canadians.
"Today, we take a pause to think about all those in our Newmarket community, our country and around the world who have lost their lives to COVID-19," Mayor John Taylor said. "These are our friends, neighbours, family members and loved ones.
"We honour and commemorate their lives and we stand united with their families, while we remember their everlasting legacies. The best thing we can do to honour those we have lost is to continue to work together, be strong and follow the public health guidelines."
As of March 9, Newmarket had more than 1,600 confirmed cases of COVID-19, resulting in 37 deaths.
