Residents will benefit from equipment at Vaughan’s new state-of-the art hospital

King-Vaughan MPP Stephen Lecce and Michael Tibollo, MPP for Vaughan-Woodbridge, highlighted two new Computed Tomography (CT) scanners and two new Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanners at the Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital, demonstrating the continued progress on Canada’s first smart hospital and the first net new hospital in Ontario in decades.

As construction of the hospital continues, MPP Lecce toured the new hospital with senior leadership and received an update on the facility’s progress. The Government of Ontario is investing over $1 billion to build this state-of-the-art hospital that will be opening soon.

“The new CT scanners and MRI scanners will provide increased access to state-of-the-art health care to our families, help save lives, and play an important role in our fight against COVID-19. My number one local priority is getting this hospital opened for families in Vaughan and King, in partnership with our generous community. Nothing matters more than overcoming this pandemic with strength and optimism,” said MPP Lecce.

Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital is the first net new hospital to be built in Ontario in the last 30 years. With a focus on enhancing patient care, the hospital features fully integrated smart technology systems.

“At a time when our province is taking decisive action to stop the spread of COVID-19, I believe Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital will be critical in efforts during the current pandemic and that it will serve York Region families for years to come,” added Lecce. “I thank both Premier Ford and Deputy Premier and Health Minister Elliott for their leadership in helping to get this incredibly important hospital built, funded and operational.”

“From world-class medical technologies to the finest mental health and addictions care, the opening of Cotellucci Vaughan Hospital will help save lives not only during this critical moment in our fight against COVID-19, but well into the future,” said Michael Tibollo, MPP for Vaughan-Woodbridge and Associate Minister of Mental Health and Addictions. “I wish to thank everyone involved in making this possible and for ensuring people and families here in Vaughan-Woodbridge have access to the highest-quality health care close to home.”

“Technology is a powerful enabler of exceptional care. With two state-of-the-art, high-definition CT scanners and two MRI scanners at Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital, our experts will be able to diagnose injuries and diseases like cancer earlier and with pinpoint accuracy, and deliver the information our patients and health providers need to make the best, personalized treatment decisions,” said Altaf Stationwala, president and CEO, Mackenzie Health.

The provincial government has invested $1.3 billion in the Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital project. Through its Ultimate campaign, the community has generated more than $180 million to date towards its $250 million goal -- the local share required to help build and equip Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital.

The Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital will be Canada’s first smart hospital, featuring devices and information systems that communicate with each other to anticipate the needs of patients and health care providers. The 1.2 million-square-foot hospital has the capacity for 350 beds with room to grow.
