COVID-19 task force hands down 30 charges in Markham, Vaughan, Newmarket, Aurora

The York Region COVID-19 enforcement task force laid 30 charges against businesses and residents found to be in noncompliance with public health restrictions and measures from Jan. 25 to 31.

Task force members visited 1,809 businesses during the seven day stretch. In addition to the charges, officials completed 474 compliance education safety measures and protocols.

Nineteen charges were issued by the City of Markham. The City of Vaughan issued four charges. York Region Public Health, York Regional Police, the Town of Aurora and the Town of Newmarket each issued one.

Fines in each case totalled $880.

Since March 2020, Public Health inspectors, municipal bylaw officers and other enforcement agencies have completed 37,786 inspections, resulting in 850 charges and 20,623 compliance education activities.

The regional spokesperson Patrick Casey said overall compliance was good including big box, grocery and retail. And about 80 per cent of business operators are routinely following the rules.

“We feel businesses are more aware now of what needs to be done to keep employees and customers safe,” Casey said.

Since emergency orders were issued Jan. 12, enforcement and provincial offences officers have authority to issue tickets to individuals not complying with provincial stay-at-home orders or those not wearing face protection indoors. They may also issue tickets to retail operators and companies that do not enforce regulations.

Under the emergency declaration enforcement personal also have authority to temporarily close a premise and disperse individuals who are gathering.
