While strict measures will stay in place, Vaughan said Wednesday, Feb. 24 that the city’s fitness centres and pools will reopen Monday, March 8 on a limited basis.

“Strict measures will be in place to protect all users and staff from the virus,” the city said on its website, with registration starting March 5.

York Region has moved from complete lockdown into the red-control zone Feb. 22, allowing businesses from private gyms to hair salons to open.

Only select fitness centres will open with a limited capacity of 10 members and scheduled time blocks for patrons to sign up for in advance.

“Other amenities in community centres will remain closed to the public until further notice,” the city added.

Fitness amenities that will remain closed include change rooms, saunas, lockers, showers, lost-and-found, and the fitness track. Some equipment has been removed, including yoga gear, ab mats and neck pads.

Only select community centre pools will also reopen to the public for recreational and length swimming, as well as aquafitness on March 8, and that availability will be limited and reassessed in the coming weeks.

Like the gyms, “there will be a capacity of 10 swimmers in the pool at a time,” the city said.
