Richmond Hill has forged ahead with winter fun through its traditional winter carnival, despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 53rd Richmond Hill Winter Carnival has brought a different kind of celebration to help relieve the cabin fever many of us have been experiencing for almost a year.

While thousands of people revelled in live entertainments and delicious food at the two-day festivity at Mill Pond Park last year, area residents are expected to partake in a variety of new activities and carnival traditions with family members within the same household from Jan. 29 to Feb. 7.

WHAT'S NEW THIS YEAR?

Winter Carnival Youth Video Challenge

The winter carnival volunteer organizing committee needs numerous short, video commercials (one to three minutes) created to spread the word about keeping the winter carnival spirit alive in February 2021.

There are various themes to choose from: “winter carnival food,” “family fun,” “winter carnival sports,” “Ookpik carnival mascot,” “elementary school hockey tradition,” etc.

You can interview a member of your family, a longtime carnival volunteer or share your family’s favourite carnival memories. It's a fun, creative way to earn volunteer hours for graduation.

Scavenger Hunt

This virtual event takes place from Jan. 29 to Feb. 7 with a long list of ideas provided online.

You will need to register your team, and your team name needs to be included in your email submissions.

Register here.

WHAT'S RETURNING?

Colouring Contest

The carnival committee has two colouring pictures for students. You can choose which one you want to colour. If you do both, only one will be considered as an entry. You can also choose to draw your own carnival Ookpik picture.

Each artist must attend a school in Richmond Hill and be in either JK, SK, Grade 1, Grade 2 or Grade 3.

Origami With Jackie

At last year’s carnival, Jackie Han and the team from Origami Canada taught many people how to create a paper swan. This year, Jackie will be teaching you virtually. All you need is a piece of paper to get started. Take your pick -- create a four-leaf clover, a rose, a bunny or all three.

Learn with Jackie here.
