Vaughan Walmart, Markham condo resident, Richmond Hill home among 24 charged for COVID-19 violations

The York Region COVID-19 enforcement task force laid 24 charges against businesses and residents found to be non-compliant with public health restrictions and measures from Feb. 8 to 14.

Task force members visited 1,779 businesses during the seven day stretch. In addition to the charges, officials completed 717 compliance education safety measures and protocols.

York Regional Police and the City of Markham each issue 11 charges. The City of Richmond Hill and the City of Vaughan each handed out one charge.

Fines in each case totalled $880.

Among them, a resident in Markham was fined for not wearing a face mask inside a condo building. A residence in Richmond Hill was charged for conducting non-essential construction work.

Since March 2020, public health inspectors, municipal bylaw officers and other enforcement agencies have completed 41,643 inspections, resulting in 908 charges and 22,129 compliance education activities, according to York Region Public Health.

Businesses failing to keep their customers and employees safe by not adhering to the mandated COVID-19 safety measures will be subject to fines.

Repeat offenders could face temporary closure.
