Just a month after Aurora introduced a limit of three garbage bags, no exceptions, the town is considering easing the new rule.

On Feb. 2, Mayor Tom Mrakas and Coun. Harold Kim said they want the town to look at introducing tags for residents to purchase if they have more than three bags of trash to put out on garbage day.

The issue will be discussed at the Feb. 23 council meeting.

While the town began on Jan. 1 to enforce a three-bag limit, Mrakas and Kim argue residents “from time to time” may need to exceed that number.

Other municipalities sell tags to residents who have additional bags of which to dispose.

No word yet on the price of the tags or how often residents would be able to use them if the idea is approved by council.

Last fall, the town introduced an education campaign on waste limits.

As of New Year’s Day, any garbage bags beyond the three-bag limit were no longer collected.

Additional bags were given a non-compliance sticker.

Residents were told they had to hold on to additional items until their next garbage collection day or drop off the items at waste depot transfer station.
