COVID-19 task force hands down 34 charges in Markham, Vaughan, Newmarket, Georgina and East Gwillimbury

The York Region COVID-19 enforcement task force laid 34 charges against businesses and residents found to be in noncompliance with public health restrictions and measures from Feb. 1 to Feb. 7.

Task force members visited 2,078 businesses during the seven day stretch. In addition to the charges, officials completed 789 compliance education safety measures and protocols.

Twenty charges were issued by the City of Markham. The City of Vaughan issued three charges. York Region Transit handed out five charges. Two charges were laid in Newmarket.

York Region Public Health, York Regional Police, East Gwillimbury and Georgina each issued one.

Fines in each case totalled $880.

Among those charged, Lions Pub And Grill in Newmarket was required to be closed for breaching the town's emergency measures bylaw.

Residents at a home in East Gwillimbury were fined for having a social gathering indoors.

Since March 2020, Public Health inspectors, municipal bylaw officers and other enforcement agencies have completed 39,864 inspections, resulting in 884 charges and 21,412 compliance education activities.

Officers from the COVID-19 task force will continue to visit essential businesses and various other locations to ensure public health measures are being met.
