Refusal by some to wear masks in condo buildings has triggered the city to launch a campaign this week to drive home the message people must cover up in common areas.

Mayor John Tory said last week that the city has heard from 63 buildings that have had more than three complaints about a refusal to wear masks. There are 12 other buildings that have had more than 10 complaints about people not wearing masks.

Civic inspection officers were sent out, but it is the responsibility of the building owner and management to ensure compliance.

The public education campaign reminds residents about the municipal bylaws and provincial regulations that require everyone to wear masks or face coverings in all indoor public settings.

This includes common areas in multi-residential buildings such as elevators, hallways, lobbies, and laundry rooms.

A person living in a building with a problem of people not wearing masks should first talk to their landlord or condo board members.

If the problem continues, they can then make a complaint to the city by calling 311.

“COVID-19 continues to be a threat to us all and we need to remain vigilant, especially as new variants of the virus have been confirmed in Toronto.,” Tory said
