Newmarket is receiving nearly $1.6 million from the province to build and repair roads, bridges, water and wastewater infrastructure.

The funds are provided by the Ontario government to small, rural and northern communities through the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund (OCIF).

This year, Newmarket and Aurora will receive more than $2.7 million across the two municipalities to address their community infrastructure needs, Christine Elliott, MPP for Newmarket-Aurora, said.

Newmarket has been allocated $1,592,136, and Aurora is receiving  $1,196,719.

“As your MPP, I am upholding my commitment to support our local municipalities by creating jobs, attracting economic growth and investment, and making our community the best place to live and grow,” Elliott said in a news release.

“Our government understands the importance of investing in our communities in order to help them grow, live, and prosper," said Michael Parsa, MPP for Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill. "If we want to attract economic investment and create jobs in Aurora, we need to continue building and repairing our roads, bridges and other infrastructure."

Ontario is providing approximately $200 million to 424 communities with populations under 100,000, along with all rural and northern communities.

Municipalities may accumulate their OCIF funding for up to five years to address larger infrastructure projects.
