COVID-19 task force hands down 26 charges in Georgina, Markham, Richmond Hill, Vaughan

Weekly blitz conducted visits to 2,204 businesses across York Region

The York Region COVID-19 enforcement task force laid 26 charges against businesses and residents found to be in non-compliance with public health restrictions and measures for the period including Jan. 18 to 24.

Task force members visited 2,204 businesses during the seven day stretch. In addition to the charges, officials completed 852 compliance education safety measures and protocols.

Six charges were issued by the City of Markham with the Town of Georgina and York Regional Police responsible for five apiece. York Region Transit issued four charges.

The remainder were issued by the City of Vaughan (three), City of Richmond Hill (two) and York Region Public Health (one).

Fines in all cases totalled $880 unless otherwise noted.

Since emergency orders were issued Jan. 12, enforcement and provincial offences officers have authority to issue tickets to individuals not complying with provincial stay-at-home orders or those not wearing face protection indoors. They may also issue tickets to retail operators and companies that do not enforce regulations.

Under the emergency declaration enforcement personal also have authority to temporarily close a premise and disperse individuals who are gathering.
