Looking back, we’ll each have a personal story of the journey through 2020 -- the year the words ‘pandemic’ and ‘COVID-19’ became commonplace in our homes. The year we learned to mask our faces, socially distance and carry on in uncertain times.

For some, that story is unimaginable. Loved ones taken too soon by this virus. Grief, already difficult, magnified by separation. To the family and friends of the Georgina community members lost during this pandemic, I send sincerest condolences on behalf of Council.

Throughout our community, there are many more stories of challenge, sacrifice and change. It has been a difficult time for all. I want to acknowledge each and every one of our residents for your perseverance. I commend you for your acts of kindness and support of one another. I thank you for your hard work and contributions. Importantly, I also implore you to stay committed to heeding public health advice in the fight against COVID-19.

It’s said that adversity can draw out strength we didn’t know we had. While I have seen first-hand the impacts of separation and loss felt locally this past year, I’ve also witnessed inspiring connection and strength. From citizens delivering groceries for vulnerable neighbours, to residents rallying to #shoplocal in support of small business, to lawn and window signs encouraging healthcare and front-line workers. This is who we are in Georgina.

Maybe we cannot always make sense of just why tough things like this pandemic happen. But we can at least take heart in the resilience and good that still somehow emerge. We can also have hope in the progress a new vaccine will bring. We will get through this.

I know at the heart of this community, Georgina is caring, respectful and strong. This is how we must move forward in 2021. Stay strong Georgina.
