A group of mayors of small urban communities in the GTHA want the federal government to step up and help new, small businesses struggling in their communities.

The “Small Urban GTHA Mayors” group issued a statement after meeting Thursday to discuss rising COVID-19 cases.

Uxbridge and Scugog are included in the group, which urged people to stay home and only go out for essential reasons.

They warn the virus is spreading through people who have travelled abroad and people gathering in private homes.

They also pointed out new, small businesses that opened after March 15, 2020, when the pandemic began, don’t qualify for federal COVID-19 business relief programs and they want the government to change that.

They say small businesses are essential to their economies and have been hit especially hard by the pandemic and ensuing lockdowns.
