Overnight parking issues on Newmarket streets this winter may be solved for some residents.

The municipality announced Dec. 23 it has launched an off-street parking program allowing residents to park in select municipal lots overnight.

With a permit, vehicles may be parked between the hours of 5 p.m. to 7 a.m. in four major parking lots, including the municipal offices at 395 Mulock Dr. and the P3 parking lots in the Riverwalk Commons area. The Magna Centre, located at 800 Mulock Dr., and the Ray Twinney Complex at 100 Eagle St. are also included in the program.

“As overnight parking is not permitted in the town, council felt it was important to provide alternate measures and flexibility for those who have additional parking challenges due to COVID-19,” said Mayor John Taylor.

The temporary program runs until April 15.

Residents may apply for a temporary parking exemption permit through the town’s online parking portal by providing their vehicle information.

Permits will be issued electronically and without the need to print or place a hard-copy permit within vehicles. Upon registering, residents will be provided with rules and regulations. Spots will be available on a first-come first-served basis.

Vehicles must be relocated by 7 a.m. each morning to allow safe snow removal in the parking lots.

Vehicles parked on streets from 2 to 6 a.m. during the winter season are subject to tickets.
