Faulty heating unit at Aurora Catholic school causes sprinklers to go off

Central York Fire Services was called to Light of Christ Catholic School in Aurora after a faulty heating unit caused the sprinkler system to activate.
On Dec. 7, at around 10:40 a.m., firefighters were called to 290 McClellan Way for an activated alarm at the school.
When firefighters arrived to the scene, there were no visible fire conditions. Students and staff were already evacuating the building.
The sprinkler head was activated in the gym, according to the CYFS report.
280 students were relocated after school staff evacuated the occupants quickly and efficiently, according to the report.
The younger students were sent to a neighbouring school, while the older students were sheltered in York Region Transit and York Paramedic Services buses.
The school made arrangements allowing students to collect their belongings and be taken home.
As a result of the incident, the school sustained some water damage.
No one was physically injured in the incident.
CYFS worked the with the school board maintenance team and identified the cause of the problem as a faulty heating unit.
Four firetrucks, 20 firefighters, one command vehicle and one chief officer were dispatched to the scene.
