Twinkling lights on the porch, hot air snowman balloons on the lawn and glowing gift boxes at the door. Richmond Hill residents and businesses are encouraged to help spread the joy this holiday season.

Richmond Hill launched a new initiative called “Light Up Richmond Hill” to help lift our community’s spirits by calling on people to decorate and light up their home or business for the holidays.

Residents or business owners may submit a photo of the holiday display to enter in a draw for a chance to win a $50 gift card.

Participants may submit a photo using this form or follow the City of Richmond Hill on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter and share your photo with @myrichmondhill using the hashtag #LightUpRH.

Photos must be submitted by Friday, December 11 at 4:30 p.m. to be entered in the draw. More details are available at RichmondHill.ca/StayHome.

Meanwhile, the city kicked off its holiday donation drive on Dec. 1, which will collect donations for those in need during this special time.

The city accepts donations at the operations centre located at 1200 Elgin Mills Rd. E. by curbside drop-off only, with COVID-19 health and safety precautions in place.

Donations needed include non-perishable food items and new toys (no stuffed animals), books, gift cards, toiletries and new clothing for children and especially teens.

All food donations will be forwarded to the Richmond Hill Food Bank, a local non-profit organization assisting those in need in the Richmond Hill community. This year, toys, toiletries and clothing will be distributed to Yellow Brick House, York Hills Centre for Children, Youth and Families and the Richmond Hill Salvation Army.

The holiday drive runs from Dec. 1 to 15, Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
