The closure of dozens of city-run amenities in Mississauga has resulted in more than one thousand workers losing their jobs.
Announced Wednesday, the largest city in Peel Region says the provincial COVID-19 lockdown of recreation and community centres, pools and cultural centres has forced the furlough of 1,100 part-time workers.
The layoffs are effective next Monday.
“The city is facing significant financial pressures as a result of this second lockdown,” Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie said in a statement.
This is not where we wanted to be. But I truly believe that Mississauga can come together, right here and right now, to get this situation under control.”
The news came a little over a week after the province put Peel Region into the grey lockdown phase of its COVID-19 response framework, mandating the closure of non-essential businesses and amenities.
Crombie said city staff will continue to monitor the situation and future financial impacts the lockdown is having on Mississauga.
The job losses impact non-essential services, and don’t impact emergency services, transit or essential city operations.
