Fines handed out to Vaughan private residence, Walmart and Food Basics in York Region for breaking COVID-19 rules

Charges were laid against 51 residents and businesses as part of York Region’s COVID-19 enforcement efforts between Dec. 14 and Dec. 20.

The York Region COVID-19 enforcement task force visited 2,87 businesses across the region last week and laid a total of 51 charges and completed 745 compliance education activities, according to a press release from the region on Dec. 22.

While the majority of charges were laid against businesses, a private residence at 43 Rustwood Road in Vaughan was issued an $880 ticket for having more than five people at indoor gathering.

Charges were also laid against multiple businesses in Vaughan including Your Dollar Store with More, The Mill Taphouse and Texas Pit Restaurant.

Two Woodbridge Malls in Vaughan each faced an $880 ticket for failure to ensure that any person in the indoor area weared a mask or face covering.

Food Basics located 9600 Islington Avenue in Vaughan was slapped with a fine of the same amount because employees were not actively monitoring the entrance.

Several Markham made the list, including Markham Acura, South Asiyan Supermarket, and Ones Better Living.

The task force issued a ticket to Walmart at 135 First Commerce Drive in Aurora after finding an employee was not wearing a face mask at work.

Since March 2020, Public Health Inspectors, municipal bylaw officers and other enforcement agencies have completed 28,184 inspections, resulting in 697 charges and 15,956 compliance education activities.

In the coming weeks, officers from the COVID-19 task force will continue to visit essential businesses and various other locations to ensure public health measures under the provincewide shutdown and York Region’s Section 22 Class Order are being met.
