The new property owners of the land where the old Howard Johnson hotel remains on 15520 Yonge St. in Aurora will be undergoing a redevelopment into a new retirement residence.
Just the facts:
According to David Waters, the director of planning and development services for the town of Aurora, the building will not be demolished.
The proposal is to use the existing structure, gut the inside, and create a retirement living residence that will provide independent and assisted living for seniors. Plans are also to create a dementia care space.
The development will be done by Traditions Seniors Housing Ltd., and they are in the early process. They are currently working on a solution for flood protection for the building as it is in a flood zone.
Waters said development includes a “facelift” for the building.
Construction is expected to start in spring of 2021 which will begin with the interior renovations.
At this time, there is no impact to the community since everything can be done on-site and within the existing structure and on the existing property.
Waters said there is no exact date for completion, but they hope for it to be up and running some time in late 2021, or early 2022.
