Vaughan has installed about 22,000 new energy efficient streetlights city-wide, through a retrofit program, in its latest move to reduce energy consumption.
"This translates into ongoing savings in operating and maintenance costs and, as a result of the reduction in energy consumption, the city will save approximately $1 million annually," the city said on its website.
The light-emitting diode (LED) technology replaces high-pressure sodium (HPS) lighting in a city where the streetlight network accounts for about 20 per cent of its overall energy consumption.
This move is the latest in a string of updates to the city's methods and operations.
In September, Vaughan citizens were able to use Quick Response (QR) codes to alert the city about full garbage cans in local parks.
In early November, the city announced that it's “the first municipality” in Canada to adopt an artificial intelligence tool to apply salt to its roads this winter.
