Dust off your skates because Newmarket's Riverwalk Commons outdoor rink is on track to open to the public on Dec. 11.

But, of course, there will be some new rules this year because of the restrictions required in the COVID-19 pandemic.

Skaters will have to book in advance. Starting on Friday, Dec. 4, you'll find a link on the Town of Newmarket website to reserve a time slot for skating. Only a week's worth of slots will be available at once.

Once you have reserved a skating time slot, you will need to answer a health screening questionnaire before you can get on the ice. There will also be a separate entrance and exit for the rink to help maintain physical distancing.

The Weather Network's 14-day forecast predicts that temperatures on the day the rink opens will be range from just above to just below freezing.

The rink opening will be delayed if required by changes in York Region's public health directives.
