When I joined Mackenzie Health as president and CEO more than a decade ago, I was excited for the promise of a new hospital in Vaughan. Now, as we prepare to open its doors, the anticipation is palpable.

Over the next few months, through a series of regular columns, we’ll be taking readers like you from across York Region along with us as we get closer to opening day. You’ll hear from members of our leadership team and physicians as they share their unique perspectives managing clinical operations, implementing smart technology and equipment, and establishing infection prevention and control measures to ensure we’re ready to safely open our second hospital. You’ll also hear how our physicians, nurses and support staff used their experience on the front lines to contribute to the design of the hospital. Every space has been designed with patients in mind.

When Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital opens in early 2021, it will be the first new hospital built in Ontario in more than 30 years. It will offer state-of-the-art equipment and technology and top specialists to deliver the ultimate in care to patients. Most importantly, it will double access to care for our community, providing critical capacity to help end hallway medicine and alleviate the pressures associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital and Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital will work in tandem to deliver necessary care to our rapidly growing community. Residents of Vaughan, Richmond Hill, the township of King and surrounding areas will have access to two hospitals, each with a full-service emergency department, core services and some specialized programs in addition to Mackenzie Health’s community-based services.

Over the next few months, our team at Mackenzie Health will give you a sneak peek into what makes Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital unique, and all the work that remains before we can safely open our doors to patients in early 2021.
