Vaughan's mayor mourns his 'great' father

Vaughan Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua is mourning his father, who died at the age of 89 on Oct. 3.

In remembering Azeglio Bevilacqua, the mayor dubbed his father as a “great” parent, teacher and mentor.

“Many people knew him from his glory days as a world-class cyclist,” Bevilacqua said. “His perseverance, tenacity and discipline brought him many victories and trophies.

“As a businessman, he was known for his integrity, honesty and altruism. A loving, caring and generous man, he touched people's hearts.”

The mayor said his father considered his “family” as the “trophy he cherished the most!”

Azeglio Bevilacqua peacefully passed away, surrounded by his family, including his wife Filomena of 65 years, his children, Emidio (Romilda), Maurizio, Anna (Frank), and Roberto (Nilda), and grandchildren Claudia, Valeria, Cristina (Michael Greco), Isabella, Jean-Paul, Victoria, Sara, Nino, Roberto Jr., and Luca.

Visitations will take place at the Vescio Funeral Home Chapel (8101 Weston Rd. 905-850-3332) on Wednesday, Oct. 7, from 6 to 9 p.m. and Thursday, Oct. 8, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. A private family chapel service and entombment will follow on Friday, Oct. 9. Donations in memory of Azeglio Bevilacqua may be made to the Mackenzie Health Foundation.
