Aurora will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for Library Square on Oct. 8.

The event will mark the beginning of construction on the largest capital project in the town’s history.

“This project will serve as a catalyst for downtown revitalization, foster employment opportunities and provide a central community space,” the town said in a release.

The Victoria Street project, beside the Aurora Cultural Centre on Church Street, will include an outdoor square and a new community facility with a 250-seat performance hall and a variety of programming spaces.

The total estimated cost of the project is $51.6 million.

The scheduled completion date is the end of 2022.

Library Square has been contentious in recent months.

Many residents and organizations support the project but critics have questioned its price tag and timing.

The project consultants and contractor include Chandos Construction Ltd, Colliers Project Leaders, RAW Design and The Planning Partnership.
