16th Avenue in Markham will be under construction for the next two years beginning in the fall as York Region continues to make improvements to sections of the York-Durham Sewage System, a.k.a. the "Big Pipe."
JUST THE FACTS
The first 1.5 kilometres of the planned three kilometres of sewer rehabilitation on 16th Avenue was completed in October 2019. The remaining 1.5 kilometres is scheduled to begin construction in the fall, with the work anticipated to be completed by the summer of 2022.
The City of Markham has granted the region’s request for an exemption to the noise bylaw to permit “amplified noise and sound” related to public works and construction taking place on 16th Avenue between Mingay and Williamson avenues.
In addition to sound barriers at compound areas, the following measures are expected to mitigate noise under the second phase of work including:
Areas impacted by the work will be fully restored following the completion of the project.
During construction, 16th Avenue will remain open to traffic, however, there may be periodic lane restrictions. Temporary sidewalk closures and the relocation of some YRT bus stops will also be required.
