With York Region under modified stage 2 restrictions as of Monday, the Town of Newmarket will be closing and adjusting some recreational programs.
The fitness centre at the Magna Centre at 800 Mulock Dr. will close and group fitness classes, including aqua fitness, will be cancelled for at least 28 days. All memberships will be put on hold, according to a Town of Newmarket news release.
The Magna pool and ice pads and the Recreation Youth Centre and Skate Park at 56 Charles St. will remain open with capacity restrictions.
All existing recreational bookings will proceed this weekend as planned, and town staff will work with all user groups on the implementation of the new regulations that begin Monday, Oct. 19 at 12:01 a.m. for 28 days.
“Now that the Province of Ontario has placed York Region into stage 2, we will continue to do everything within our power to follow the direction of the province and the medical experts so that our children can continue to go to school, our hospitals do not become overwhelmed and for the protection of those that are most vulnerable in our community, including our residents in long-term care facilities,” Newmarket Mayor John Taylor said.
“Please, let’s continue to come together and be vigilant. This is going to be another difficult time for all of us and particularly our businesses, we must do our part and support each other and our business community during these very uncertain times,” he added.
To encourage residents to continue to shop local and support the business community, the Town of Newmarket will be launching an Enjoy Local campaign.
"The coming months are going to be hard on our business community. The one thing we all need to do is support our local businesses. Amazon doesn’t need us right now but our local restaurants and stores do need us,” Taylor said. “The holidays are around the corner, please try to do your shopping within our community. Order take-out whenever possible, purchase gift cards -- please show our homegrown businesses that we care and that we are in their corner.”
All residents are asked to keep the following reminders from York Region Public Health top of mind to help stop the spread of COVID-19:
Stay home as much as possible
