Rogers Communications has announced its expanding 5G network has been launched in six York Region communities.

The Sept. 1 announcement marks the latest advancement of technology for the communications giant, which will include 18 municipalities in Ontario and more than 60 towns and cities across Canada by the end of 2020.

Among 50 new municipalities announced to receive 5G are Aurora, Newmarket, Markham, Richmond Hill, Vaughan and Whitchurch-Stouffville.

5G is the latest generation in wireless technology.

"5G is the next big leap forward that will change how we live and work," Rogers president and CEO Joe Natale said. "Our award-winning network is Canada’s most reliable and most trusted and we are proud to be extending the country’s first and now largest 5G network."

Capable of performing functions and data usage at unprecedented speeds, the Rogers 5G network will support 10 million connections per square kilometre and will be capable of reducing response times to as low as one millisecond.

The Rogers 5G network is the largest in Canada. It debuted in Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Vancouver in January.

"Strong digital infrastructure and investments in 5G are critical to fuel productivity and innovation across this country now, as we power out of COVID-19, and in the future, as we reset the competitive landscape for Canada, globally," Natale said.

The network is currently accessible to customers on Rogers Infinite plans and unlimited business wireless plans, with select 5G-ready devices.

More than two million Canadians are currently on Rogers Infinite unlimited data plans.
