A Markham elementary school has posted the first confirmed case of COVID-19 in York Region's two school boards.
An active case of the virus was confirmed at Little Rouge Public School and posted on the York Region District School Board's COVID-19 advisory board Sept. 14.
Families were advised all appropriate measures are being taken, and York's public health unit will communicate directly with those that had contact with the case.
The board also noted a positive case at a school does not mean the individual was exposed to COVID-19 at the school, adding they may have been exposed somewhere else in the community.
The York Catholic District School Board reported a COVID-19 case of a staff member at a before-and-after-school program at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Elementary School.
They were notified by York Region Public Health on Sept. 12 and reported the employee to have last worked on the morning of Sept. 10.
The two cases reported Sept. 14 are among 10 more positive COVID-19 cases reported at GTA schools as of Sept. 14, as in-person classes resumed for many boards across the province.
In York Region, 184 people under 18 years old had contracted COVID-19 before school reopening, which was six per cent of the total confirmed cases at the time.
