Cyclists, even with new bike lanes, still riding on sidewalk

I came across this Markham Economist & Sun story from April 2016, Bikes on our sidewalks? Markham takes idea for a spin, while researching pedestrian safety.

I live near Centre Street and Bathurst Street and Vaughan just finished creating bike lanes. The problem is, even with bike lanes, cyclists are still riding on the sidewalk.

I think a minimum suggestion would be that cyclists need a bell on their bike. I am hard of hearing and do not always hear cyclists approaching. In the last month, I have almost been hit at least three times on my daily one-hour walk.

I appreciate your effort to make people aware of this issue. Until someone gets seriously hurt, nothing will be done. Why spend all this money on a bike path along Centre Street and have cyclists still riding their bikes on the sidewalk?
